The efforts of local apprentices Ryan and Reece Marchello are nothing short of inspiring, according to the Australia Business Apprenticeship Centre.
Vocational training is the driving force behind a Milton motoring family’s success, with three siblings accruing almost seven qualifications between them on their mission to set the V8 Supercar race track on fire.
Marchello Racing Team (MRTeam) manager and driver, Terry Marchello, says he put his sons Ryan and Reece through three apprenticeships each in the automotive field – initially to help with the family automotive business.
However, the boys have accrued enough skills between them to build their own cars to race competitively.
At 22, the youngest of the Marchello Racing Team family, Reece, has TAFE qualifications in Automotive Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Electrical, and Engineering Sheet Metal Fabrication. Older brother Ryan, 24, has qualified in Automotive Engineering, Automotive Electrical and is working towards his Engineering Fitting and Machining certification.
Not to be left out, their sister Shannan Hoy, who manages the team’s marketing and media efforts, is currently undertaking a traineeship in Accounting.
“Australian Business Apprenticeships Centre made sure Ryan, Reece and Shannan were lined up with the right training for our needs with access to the full range of Government incentives on offer including tools for the trade and travel and accommodation allowances,” Terry said.
The business was also eligible for Government financial support as the siblings underwent their training.
“I believe it is very important for tradesbased business owners and supervisors to ensure they pass on their expertise and knowledge to the following generations. If you don’t, it could be lost forever,” Terry said.
MRTeam currently competes in the Improved Production Cars series, with father Terry also getting behind the wheel as well as acting as chief engineer.
The team is planning to purchase multiple VE Holden Commodores, with the goal to compete in the V8 Supercars Development Series in 2014 as a three-car team – part of their ongoing ambition to reach the main game.
And there is also further training on the horizon as both Reece and Ryan aim to get further qualifications.
“We may be a small and modest team at present, but we have big dreams for the future,” Terry said.
“We are constantly aiming for excellence and improvement with each goal we set for ourselves, and we believe that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.”
